Two Great Books for Kids

Hubber Donna Campbell Smith entertains youth so thoroughly with Pale as the Moon and An Independent Spirit: The Tale of Betsy Dowdy and Black Bess that readers don't even realize how much they are learning in the process. Both books are set on the North Carolina Outer Banks and are popular choices of North Carolina teachers.

Pale as the Moon takes a look at what might have happened to the Lost Colony of the Outer Banks. A young Indian girl, Gray Squirrel, and her Outer Banks pony befriend the English settlers. Smith's tale of Gray Squirrel's adventures reveal many nuances of Native American culture.

An Independent Spirit is the story of North Carolina's own Paul Revere. Betsy Dowdy rides her pony all night, crossing the sound, to warn that the British were coming. This exciting adventure portrays life on the North Carolina Outer Banks in the Revolutionary period.

Donna Campbell Smith grew up just a few miles inland from the Outer Banks and has had a lifelong fascination with horses. She has also written three non-fiction books, The Book of Miniature Horses (The Lyons Press, 2005)and The Book of Draft Horses: The Horse That Built the World (The Lyons Press, 2007) and The Book of Mules and Other Equine Hybrids, which will be released in 2008 by The Lyons Press.
